Halloween is the start of the holiday season and of holiday weight gain. The average American gains between 6 and 8 pounds between Halloween and New Years, but only looses 2 to 4 of those pounds once the holidays are over. How can we help ourselves and our children prevent this holiday weight gain? One of the main things we can do for our kids is to make sure that they are eating healthy diet on a normal basis. If they do, they will have less physical cravings for candy. Children should have 6 servings of fruits and veggies, 25 grams of fiber, ½ their body weight in grams of protein, and ½ their body weight in ounces of water every day.
Dr. Kantor also shares a list of Halloween treats free of preservatives, artificial dyes and colors, and high fructose corn syrup. While these candies can be a little more expensive, Kantor recommends handing out smaller portions of better treats – quality over quantity.
