fat lettersThe media has sensationalized the recent letters that schools are sending home to parents if their child has a BMI over 30, by calling them “fat letters.”  Are these letters a good thing, or are they offensive to parents and their children? Dr. Kantor discussed this and other children’s health issues with WINA Radio.  Dr. Kantor believes that any measure that the schools can take towards helping the obesity epidemic is a good thing.  Nowhere in these letters does it say that the children are fat, that is parents being sensitive and media dramatization.  Schools are simply taking height and weight measurements, using a standard formula to determine the BMI, and sending a letter home if their child is at risk for obesity.  With gym classes all but extinct in many American classrooms, and the rise of American obesity, we need to take preventative steps in the right direction.
