Dr. Kantor was a recent guest on WFHG Supertalk Radio with Steve Hawkins to discuss the Affordable Care Act. In January and February Dr. Kantor predicted that certain aspects of the bill would be delayed or repealed (like the long term care). Since that time we have seen this come to fruition and the main reason is that this bill was not designed to work, it was designed to pass through the House and Senate. The disastrous roll out of the website is a visual example of the program not working but it is only a minor part of the problem. The real problem is that the government promised insurance companies that they would put 30 million new people into the insurance system. This hasn’t happened, mainly because of the way that the policy was designed with only a $95 penalty. They aren’t seeing an influx of young, healthy people, regardless of the website problems, and as a result insurance companies have had to raise rates. Latest reports state that the average policy is between 47-53% higher with much higher deductibles.
So what is the sensible approach to health care in this country? Dr. Kantor says that to truly fix the problems, we need to go back to the basics, start with educating our children and focus on prevention not just treatment of disease.
