Dr. Kantor was a recent guest on Health Beat with Kathy Davis. They discussed the importance of proper nutrition for kids and ideas for healthy, balanced lunches that healthychildren will enjoy.

The CDC says 75% of all chronic diseases are nutrition related, that fact alone makes eating healthy extremely important.  We also have an obesity epidemic in the US and among our children, and we need to combat it and prevent it with proper nutrition.   Kids can be picky eaters, but if we engage them in the process of buying, prepping and/or cooking the food they will be more likely to eat it. Children are very smart, we really don’t give them enough credit.  If we take the time to explain why healthy living and eating is so important instead of just trying to force them they will be much more likely to do it.

Examples of Healthy Lunches:

Lettuce Wrap (can be served with gluten-free bread instead)

1 large leaf of lettuce or gluten free bread, filled with nitrate free deli turkey or chicken, spinach , and 1 ounce of cheese, served with 1 cup of chopped melon and ¼ cup nuts or trail mix

Chicken or Tuna Salad Dippers

1 cup of chicken or tuna salad, almond crackers for dipping, served with a banana and 1 cup of cucumber slices with guacamole or hummus for dipping
