tasty treatsWhen it comes to feeding children tasty treats around Halloween and the holidays, we must remember the old saying, everything in moderation.  Dr. Kantor shared healthy alternatives to typical sweet treats and how to encourage children to eat them, with South Florida Parenting Magazine.  One easy tip, don’t get candy too far ahead of time and snack on it.  If the sweets are in the house, they will get eaten. Try to keep healthier choices in the house rather than junk food because what’s available is what everyone will eat. If children are fed nutritiously, with lean proteins, healthy fats, fruits and veggies, they will crave candy and junk less.  It’s also important to make sure they are properly hydrated with water, and not dyed drinks or drinks loaded with sugar.

Good alternatives to typical candies are those without dyes, high fructose corn syrup, excessive sugar, and preservatives. A few good examples are: Newman’s Own chocolate (organic), Annie’s organic fruit snacks, Pirates Booty, and Pure Fun Fruit Rocks. However, even these should be eaten in moderation.  We also need to educate our children about nutrition and not just tell them they can’t eat the junk.  We should explain why this type of junk food is bad for them and educate them in why nutritious food is healthy for their body.
