Craving Sugar (ie. Ice cream, slushies, etc.) Can indicate the opiate receptors are stimulated and there can be inflammation present or a hormonal imbalance. Looking at your average meal and snack consumption is going to be the best way to determine if there are “holes” in your nutrition causing cravings. Aim to eat 9-11 servings of vegetables and some fruit, drink at least half your body weight in ounces of plain water daily, 25-30% of your daily consumption should come from healthy anti-inflammatory fats like fish, avocado, nuts, seeds, etc. 

Craving Ice is a form of Pica a eating disorder common among pregnant women and/or 3rd world countries that have a malnourished population. Pica is a when a nutrient deficient person craves none food substance like ice, clay or detergent. This is a common condition in someone who is iron deficient. If you find you are craving shaved ice or ice cubes make sure you are eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, quality protein and fats and also consider taking a multi vitamin/ mineral supplement regularly.   

Craving Gluten or starchy carbohydrates can indicate there is inflammation and a stress hormone imbalance. Carbohydrates are typically craved when the body is looking for energy in any form, the cortisol output can be off balance and if insulin levels are not balanced the body will also crave carbohydrates. Make sure you are getting at least 7 hours of sleep per night, eating a healthy diet rich in vegetables, healthy fats, proteins, and also practicing daily stress management. 

Craving Dairy is a food that can be craved when the body is not tolerating lactose, if it is causing inflammation then the body craves more of it to relieve inflammation, when it should really be eliminated. Opt for healthy dairy substitutes like coconut milk or coconut yogurt, almond milk, etc.
