Chiropractor Magazine: Why eating healthy during the winter season is especially important for people with substance abuse problems?

Dr. Kantor: My program emphasizes the importance of eating a balanced, nutrient rich diet all throughout the year but it is especially important for those suffering addiction issues in the Winter months.  Those who have substance abuse problems can turn to their addicted substance when they feel depressed, using it as an escape from reality and a boost.  The risk of developing depression goes up during the Winter months, due to reduced exposure to sunlight, specifically vitamin D deficiency and the lonely feeling of having “cabin fever” feeling of being cooped up indoors with less interaction with people.
