obesityMike Krcil of WCNS Radio recently had Dr. Kantor as a guest on the talk radio show, Krcil’s Perch.  They discussed everything from the recent news topic of the “Fat Letters,” to obesity, health care and Dr. Kantor’s all-natural food companies Service and Green Box Foods.

Their main topic of discussion focused on obesity, which has become such a problem in our country that by 2020, 50% of the American population will be considered obese. This is devastating for health care, as well as the future and health of our country. Schools is 21 states are following the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which says that all schools should measure children for a BMI, and are sending “fat letters” home to the parents of children with high BMI’s.  Many parents are embarrassed or upset by these letters, but Dr. Kantor believes that anything that a school can do to try and improve the health of our children is a good thing. It isn’t just the social stigma of being overweight that we need to worry about. It increases the chance of type 2 diabetes by over 300 percent, and the risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer greatly increase as well. If we could lower the rate of obesity by getting more active and living a healthier lifestyle, it would greatly impact the health care system.  Obamacare wasn’t designed to fix the broken system; it was designed to help make it more affordable for more people.  We need to bring the focus of the system to preventative medicine, and not on disease and accident management.
