healthy snacks AJCKids are heading back to school, and that leaves many parents wondering what healthy snacks and lunch choices they can pack for their children. Dr. Kantor recently spoke with the Atlanta Journal Constitution about nutrition for kids, and gave many ideas and tips for healthy eating.  He also says that schools need to teach nutrition; that kids need to learn that an apple is healthier than a cupcake and why.  While it is great that they are taking the junk food out of vending machines and providing healthy options, that is not what the kids are picking. As long as the unhealthy options like pizza and french fries are available, children will typically choose them. Most important is that our kids need to drink plenty of water, not sugary or artificially colored drinks, and stay away from processed foods.  Stick with all-natural or organic foods whenever possible. This is the time to establish good healthy eating habits that will carry over into adulthood.

Healthy, low calorie, and inexpensive snacks for kids:

  • Carrots w/ 4 tbsp hummus
  • 6-8oz of plain greek yogurt w/ ½ cup berries
  • Lettuce wraps – 3 large romaine lettuce leaves, 3 slices nitrate-free deli meat, slice of tomato, 1 slice cheese and mustard
  • Homemade trail mix
  • 2 tbsp dried fruit w/ ¼ nuts

Dr. Kantor also discussed his children’s book, which should be coming out this month, called The Green Box League of Nutritious Justice. This goal of this book is to teach children about nutrition and making healthy lifestyle choices in a fun way! It will also include great healthy recipes and exercises.
