One of the most popular gifts for Valentine’s Day is chocolate but not all are created equal. Which are the healthiest types and which are the ones to avoid? Dr. Kantor answers these questions with Len Erickson of WLKF Radio.

According to Mayo Clinic, cocoa appears to reduce risk factors for heart disease because it contains heart-healthy antioxidants. The right type of chocolate can also help prevent type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart attack.  So which is the healthiest kind? Dark chocolate, hands down, because it has the most flavinols which research has proven is good for you in moderation.  3 oz is the amount that has shown to be helpful. Choose a chocolate that has a cocoa content of 65% or higher and stick to 3oz at a time.  Avoid milk chocolate or chocolates with fillings, which have preservatives, additives and extra sugar and can actually contribute to heart disease and diabetes.

They also discussed Dr. Kantor’s new book, The Green Box League of Nutritious Justice, which is a fun book about healthy living designed for children to do with their families. The book is filled with fun stories to keep children engaged, as well as recipes, exercises of all levels, fun but detailed descriptions of veggies, fruits and proteins and more.
