Halloween candy is already all over the shelves, and many kids are contemplating which costumes they will be wearing for trick-or-treating. What are parents that choose to live a healthier lifestyle supposed to do with all of these treats? In general holiday candy is processed, full of dyes and sugar. Dr. Kantor suggests that you try and get the healthiest treats that you can, and still remember to eat them in moderation. A few great examples are: Newman’s Own chocolates, Trail Mix, Earth Balls Fair Trade Milk Chocolates and Yummy Earth organic lollipops. We shouldn’t try to completely ban candy though; trying to stop them completely just won’t work. They will end up sneaking it or binging on it when given the chance. Instead, make sure that your children are eating a nutritious diet normally and you won’t have to worry about the cravings as much. Then we should allow children to eat the healthier candies in moderation. We must also lead by example to send the right message that living a healthy lifestyle is an important family value, not just something that is being dictated to the children.
