Dr. Kantor recently spoke with Taylor Thomas of WHUR Radio about the weight creep that we see over the holidays, and how we can prevent it. The holidaysaverage American gains 7 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Years and unfortunately most of us don’t lose it, or all of it over the next year. What we end up with is weight creep; gaining a few extra pounds every year that add up to be a lot over the course of several years. This is part of the reason why American’s are getting heavier.

So what can we do to avoid it? Dr. Kantor suggests getting a pedometer and aiming to walk 10,000 steps per day, whether it be at the mall or the park.  Just doing this will help reduce stress (that is often induced by the holidays), reduce carb and sugar cravings and increase serotonin levels. As far as during the meals, we should focus on all-natural lean protein, non-starchy veggies and some heart healthy fats.  Avoid refined flours and sugars and make half of your plate fruits and veggies, ¼ all-natural lean protein, and less than ¼ of starchy vegetable.
