Dr. Kantor recently spoke with MedHelp about healthy kids lunch choices and gave suggestions for what parents can pack in their children’s lunchboxes as they head back to school. While schools are starting to offer healthier choices, those often times are not what the children are picking. Instead, he suggests that we pack a lunch for them, and get our children involved in the process. Stay away from processed foods – they contain additives, preservatives, dyes and often times too much sugar and salt. Instead pack water bottles, or water flavored with fruit and the fruit, veggies and lean proteins that children enjoy. Here are just a couple of his easy, and healthy lunch options.
- Two slices of gluten free or whole wheat bread with 1 or 2 tbsp almond butter or sunflower butter with all fruit spread/real berries, an apple, carrot sticks and hummus for dipping.
- A serving of almond crackers, 1 cup of chicken or tuna salad, banana, several cucumber slices with guacamole dip
- 6-8 oz of greek yogurt, ½ c all-natural granola, ½ c berries and 5 celery sticks with all natural peanut butter and raisins (ants on a log)
They also talk about his upcoming book The Green Box League of Nutritious Justice which has fruits, veggies and lean proteins for the “good” characters vs. obesity, cholesterol, sugar etc. as the “bad” characters. This book will be a great, fun and educational source to get children more aware about nutrition. It should be published sometime this month.
